Longview Crime Statistics Released

One east Texas city is a little safer as Longview police release this past year's crime statistics. According to police records, aggravated assaults were down in Longview by 12 percent. Violent crimes against persons and property were also down. Murder cases were marginally up from 7 murders in 2005 to 10 in 2006. Overall calls to police were up, but police say that is for a good reason.

"Our calls for service so far this year are up compared to last year but that's just because more people are getting involved making more calls to police about crime and suspicious activity and that's a plus we like that and we want to keep encouraging citizens to do that" said Longview police sergeant Shawn Pendleton.

And with the city's population still growing, the department will increase it's patrol officer ranks from 155 officers to 167 over the next year.
