Man Evades Police And Puts East Shoppers In Danger

It was a scary day for some East Texas shoppers, when a man sped through town trying to escape police.  The chase started west of Tyler at Lindsey Park when the Smith County Sheriff's Department says it approached a suspicious vehicle.  When the deputy began questioning the driver, deputies say the man sped off through town, making it all the way to the Broadway Square Mall in Tyler.

After pushing several people off the road, at times going 90 miles per hour, the sheriff's department says it was forced to push the driver off the road. The driver ended up going in to a curb and was later taken into custody. Fortunately, sheriff's deputies say no one was injured.

"At one point of time they backed off of him hoping that he would slow down, but due to the circumstances he was driving recklessly and forcing people off the road, so they felt like he was endangering the public," said Smith County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Roy Tomlin.

The driver, who's name has not been released, was arrested and charged with evading arrest and possession of a controlled substance.
