East Texas Police Department Plays Santa

For almost 30 years, an East Texas Police Department has helped give the citizens in its community a Merry Christmas. The Winnsboro Police Department calls it the Santa Cop's Hope Fund.

Tables full of toys, boxes full of food and volunteers ready to help is what more than a hundred Winnsboro families were welcomed Wednesday morning.

"I got here at 7 o'clock this morning and there was a long line outside of here and tons of cars waiting in line, and we don't open until 8 clock," said Linda Barrett, Coordinator of Santa Cop's Hope Fund.  For more than a month, the Winnsboro Police Department has been collecting toys and food donations for those that need a little help this Christmas.

"I am so amazed at this community because they really pull together for a lot of things, and I'm telling you this Hope Fund has been fabulous," said Barrett. Jack Yarbrough stopped by and picked out gifts for his two grandchildren.

"It helps a lot," said Jack Yarbrough, Winnsboro Resident. "I live on a fixed income, and it's hard for me to afford gifts. It gives them (grandchildren) something to look forward to. When they see these they know there is going to be something. It takes a lot of love for these people to do this." Love it, volunteers say they do very much.

"It's about Christmas, and it's about giving and about taking care of your community," said Officer Shirley McCintosh of the Winnsboro Police Department.

"It's great for the people that get to come out and get toys, that's great, but the rest of us get a heck of a lot more out of it," said Barrett. With the food, every family also received a free hen for Christmas, donated by Brookshires.
