East Texas Fire Marshal's Office Gets New Arson Dog

In the past year, Longview has seen 18 arson fires. To help them, the East Texas Fire Marshal's Office got a new addition.  It has four legs, yellow in color and one of the best noses around. It's the city of Longview's very own accelerant dog, or better known as arson dog.

When you first look at 15 month old Nina, a yellow lab, you would never think she's smells for a living, but that's exactly what she does. She goes in to an arson situation and helps fire investigators, like her owner Mark Moore, determine if a fire has been intentionally started.

"She is going to be an exceptional resource," said Longview Fire Investigator Mark Moore. "It saves on tremendous amounts of man hours when we go into work a fire scene. We can bring a dog in and they can actually point us in an area of liquids or something that might have been poured."   Nina isn't the fire department's first accelerant dog. In 2003, it got Tori, but because of health reasons she had to retire in August. A month later, Southwest Plastics went up in flames, and an accelerant dog from Dallas had to be called in. Now, Nina will be that dog.

"She's a resource for all of the arson investigators throughout East Texas, so she won't be just working in Longview," said Moore. Wherever Nina goes, however, so does her owner.

"She depends on me much like a child," said Moore. "I mean she depends on me for all of her needs."   Just like Longview depends on her to help catch the criminals who start fires. Nina comes from the ATF's canine training facility in Virginia. She is just one of 82 accelerant dogs in the country.
