A small propellor plane crashed near a high school Tuesday, killing one person on the plane and injuring another, emergency medical officials said.

The two-seat single-engine Cessna went down behind Connally High School near a football stadium, said Warren Hassinger, spokesman for Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services.

The school, which was not in session, was not hit.

The injured person was taken to a hospital, Hassinger said.

Travis County sheriff's deputies got the call about the crash at 8:19 a.m. Some deputies already were in the area doing a search for homeless camps when the plane went down near them, Hassinger said.

"The crash scene is spread over quite an area," he said.

Authorities were searching to make sure there were no other victims. It wasn't immediately known where the plane originated, and the names of those onboard weren't immediately released.

"We're a little bit relieved it didn't crash into the school or residences," said Capt. Art Cardenas of the Travis County Sheriff's Department.
