East Texas Student Struck By School Bus

An East Texas student was struck today by a school bus while walking across a busy street. It happened around 8:00 a.m. at Forest Park middle school in Longview. The 6th grader attempted to cross the street near Pegues Place, a busy street that connects two parts of the campus.

Longview school administrators say there is a crossing guard at this crosswalk in the morning and afternoons. But they say this morning, the student tried to crossed even though the crossing guard told him not to. They say the bus was just beginning to roll through the cross walk and bumped the student sending him to the hospital with a few bumps and bruises.

School officials say all indications are that this was just an accident, but they say they are following all of their procedures carefully.

Andrea Mayo, Interim Superintendent, Longview I.S.D. said, "The Longview police were there to talk with the driver, to ask questions as we would anytime an accident would happen. At this time, he has gone on to make sure a drug and alcohol screening was conducted. We don't feel like there will be any findings."

School officials say, even before today, there has been talk within the district and the city about ways to make the cross walk safer.
