Tatum Rallies Around Football Team

With the holidays upon us, many East Texans are busy trying to finish decorating their homes with green and red.   In one East Texas town, however, the colors are a bit different, as the red has been substituted with white. All the small town of Tatum wants for Christmas is its football team to win state.

"Football is this town," said Karen Mcilwain, Eagle Fan.

"Football is big here," said Donna Craig, Eagle Fan. "We have a new coach. Coach Evans, he's awesome. Thank heavens for Evans."

"Tatum is a small town, and we don't get put on the map very often, so when our football team can do something's great for us it makes us really proud," Wendy Williams, Eagle Fan. Tatum has a lot to be excited about as the Eagles are now just one of 4 teams left in the state for Class 2A District 1.

"They are doing great," said Thelma Shelton, Eagle Fan. "They are doing great. They kind of started off slow on the first game, but I knew they were going to pull out of it." Eagle fans say it doesn't matter if you know someone on the team or not. On Friday night, everyone is at the football game.

"It really brings together our community," said Mcilwain. "It brings our schools closer together, but we have fans not only from the Tatum area, but they come from all around."

"They are packed," said Williams. "I think we have other towns joining us because I don't think Tatum has enough people to pack the stadium like we do." The Eagles won it all last year with a perfect 15 and 0 record. They are not undefeated this year, but fans say they are just as good.

"I predict they are going to go all the way," said Shelton.

"We think they are going all the way and win the championship again this year," said John Moore, Eagle Fan.  Tatum faces Cotulla in Waco this Saturday night in the semi-finals. Also playing this weekend from East Texas is Brownsboro and Carlisle.
