Leaving Your Car Running Unattended Could Cost You

It's cold outside, and you're in a hurry but that does not excuse you for doing something illegal.  We're talking about leaving your vehicle turned on while you're not inside.  According to Tyler City ordinance, "It is unlawful to park and leave unattended a motor vehicle with the engine running or that has the key in the ignition." State laws say the same.

Insurance agents we spoke with say if your car is stolen because you left the keys in it, your insurance premium could go up. And you face the possibility of having your insurance denied if you have multiple claims. They say the manner in which it all affects you depends on what kind of coverage you have, your record, and how the incident took place.

"Just think about what you're doing and, you know, protect the property that you have, make sure your car is locked, while your car's running, while you're inside, and that way if something should happen, your vehicle is protected," said Texas State Low Cost Insurance  agent Chad Osborne.

Officials with the city of Tyler say you could be charged up to $500 for leaving your vehicle unattended.
