Students, Citizens Learn About City's GIS

It's technology that can tell you just about anything you want to know about a piece of land or property. And Wednesday, more than 500 students and citizens got the chance to learn about it at "GIS day." GIS stands for "Geographic Information Systems."  The city, police department, fire department, and the Gregg County Appraisal District use it everyday to track important information.

For instance, it can help to decide where to build the next fire station or when to re-pave streets. Coordinators describe it as a "smart map," or one that has a database behind it.

"The basis behind GIS is geography and geography affects us all. The city of Longview, basically all of our information is geography-based. That's everything from when you call 911 to when you report a waterline broke, it's all geography based," says Justin Cure, CIS Administrator.

Organizers say they hope today's event gets students excited about geography and possibly thinking about going into GIS for a career.
