Firefighters Battle Blaze At Houston Area Chemical Plant

A fire at a chemical plant in East Houston engulfed a rail car on Tuesday, sending flames more than 30 feet into the air.

The fire at the Albemarle Corp. plant along the Houston Ship Channel began around 5 p.m.

The cause of the fire or whether anyone was injured was not immediately known.

Black smoke rose from the tank car and could be seen for miles from the plant, located in the Houston suburb of Pasadena.

According to the company's Web site, the plant sits on 409 acres and employs more than 300 workers.

The Web site also says the plant has an outstanding safety record and recently completed 3 million safe hours worked between a recordable injury.

The plant's volunteer fire brigade battled the blaze.

The Richmond, Va., based company is a leading global producer of aluminum alkyls used in chemical synthesis and other specialty chemicals for consumer electronics; pharmaceuticals; agricultural, automotive and industrial products; and construction and packaging materials.
