Andy Woods Elementary Turns 50 Years Old

Andy Woods Elementary in Tyler turns 50 this year, and today, there was a big birthday bash to celebrate.

The Children's Honor Choir kicked off the day's events. Then a number of speakers, including past and current students, talked about what Andy Woods Elementary means to them.

The school was named after a very popular Tyler coach. Today, his son Milton and his widow, Melba, watched as everyone celebrated half a century of learning.

"I think he would have been pleased as punch. Really, he would have. He loved, as he called them, 'Kiddos', and he loved teaching. He loved coaching. He was just an educator at heart, and he would have loved this," said Melba.

Several hundred people attended the celebration, including some of the school's early principals.
