East Texas Schools Hold Veterans Day Celebrations

Veterans Day is tomorrow and in honor of those who've served our country, students at elementary schools across East Texas held a number of performances this morning.

At Bell Elementary veterans of several branches attended a ceremony in the school's cafeteria. The school's choir and 2nd graders sang patriotic songs. Students also read letters, thanking veterans for their sacrifices.

"I've been reading the letters that they gave us and after everything, I really think that they appreciate and understand that freedom doesn't come easy and somebody had to pay a price," said Iran Contra veteran Larry McCowin.

Caldwell Elementary and John Tyler High School also showed their appreciation for veterans.

A number of ceremonies are scheduled to take place all over East Texas tomorrow. Rusk will be holding theirs at the downtown square at 11:00 a.m. Smith County is set to dedicate a new Vietnam Veterans monument at 12:00 p.m. And the Van Zandt County Historical Commission has planned a veterans appreciation ceremony at the Canton Civic Center at 2:00 p.m.
