A fast and frightening chase through the Low Country Georgia and Coastal Empire ended with a Savannah man in handcuffs.

It all started early Wednesday afternoon, after a Hardeeville officer tried to pull over a stolen pickup truck. Tape from the officer's dashboard camera shows even police were worried about what this suspect would do next.

Officer Chris Nollinger was looking for two different suspicious trucks Wednesday, and spotted a stolen green Chevy first.

"That was the vehicle I was originally going after to stop," explained Nollinger. "However, the Ford pickup truck is the one that made the abrupt maneuver, and that's what drove my attention to it. I figured that might be the other one that I need to get."

When the white Ford took off on Interstate 95, Nollinger gave chase, and realized quickly he'd need some help.

Audio from the dashboard camera picked up this request: "Get 'em up here. I need some help. This guy's driving crazy."

Nollinger got backup from several different departments, and the driver started taking even more risks.

"The suspect in the truck decided he was going to run cars off the road at I-16 and 95," said Capt. Matt Libby, with the Port Wentworth Police Department. "When he did that, he forced two cars immediately right off the road. I'm now being told there was a minor accident with another car near the bottom of the ramp."

That's when police made their move.

"Once we got officers in place, we slowed traffic behind the officer, in an attempt to do a PIT maneuver," explained Libby.

The pickup crashed into the median just East of I-95, but the suspect wasn't done running.

Libby said, "He took flight across I-16, almost getting hit by vehicles as they were coming westbound on the interstate. He fled down the hill, and went through a--for all intents and purposes--a barbed-wire fence."

After a short chase, police had the man in custody. They finally identified him as 24-year-old James Young, from Savannah. He's now facing a slew of charges from the chase, and from what they found in the stolen truck.

"I believe we might have recovered some ecstasy pills in the vehicle," said Libby. "We'll seize that as well and send it to the crime lab for analysis."

Officers say despite the dangerous driving they encountered, they were proud of the cooperation among departments, and that nobody was seriously hurt.

Police say Young was originally wanted on suspicion of stealing some ATVs and golf carts in Jasper County, but it turns out he was already a felon wanted on weapons charges by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.
