Union Steelworkers Are Notified Goodyear Will Close Plant

The United Steelworkers Local 746L says it's been notified that temporary workers will start working in several of the Goodyear plants this week, including Tyler's. They were also notified Goodyear intends to make an announcement tomorrow it will close the Tyler plant.

Union President, Jim Wansley told his fellow members about Goodyear's plan today at a rally on the union grounds. Wansley says the reason they went on strike in the first place is because Goodyear was going to close the Tyler plant.  He says the announcement will not break the union.

"It's to try to break membership, to try to scare them out of the picket line and this membership won't break, and we won't cross," said Wansley. "We won't let this community down. If we lose this fight, they will close this plant."

"Goodyear we are going to stand tight until you come back to the table and talk to us because we are the ones that can get the tires out the door," said Union member Frank Leason.

KLTV 7 News spoke with Senator Kevin Eltife today.  He said he also heard Goodyear intends to close the plant. Union President Jim Wansley says he will be going to Philadelphia Thursday to meet with other union members.
