Longview Hosts Annual Buddy Walk

The fifth annual Buddy Walk drew a large crowd today in Longview.  People from all over East Texas turned out to Teague park to support down syndrome awareness.

"One in approximately 733 births result in a child with down syndrome.  There are over 90 families in the East Texas area that are in our group," said event coordinator Lisha Mack.

Families of children with down syndrome joined in the fun and also met with other families.

"Down syndrome children are pretty much the same as other children.  They just have special needs and to make aware that these children aren't any different," said Kathy Hoffman , whose daughter suffers from the condition.

For many, their inspiration is this year's team leader, Rachel Connors.  She lives life to fullest with down syndrome, and proves it can be over come.

"We raise awareness of people with down syndrome and people with all disabilities that they can be productive members of our society," Mack said.

More than 300 people participated in the Buddy Walk.
