True Vine Baptist Church Gets Historic Landmark Status

True Vine Baptist Church has its roots just after the Civil War. Now, two buildings are given Tyler Historic Landmark status.

The Moses P. Timms Educational Building on West Oakwood is home to youth events, and the now-vacant parsonage across the street is one of just a few remaining in the city owned by African Americans.

True Vine's pastor says they hope to use the buildings to serve the community in new ways.

"We have many different diversities as far as cultures in this community, and we know that there is a need for English as a second language, a need for job training in this community and we want to be a part of that," says Rev. Edgar Roberson.  Roberson is only the seventh pastor in the church's 134-year history.

The parsonage and the educational building are both in need of repair.  If you would like to help True Vine in their repair process, you can help through the newly-organized Oakwood Vines Community Development Corporation.

Their address is:
True Vine Baptist Church
713 W Oakwood St
Tyler, TX 75702
