The iPod Turns 5

It was five years ago that Apple Computer introduced the iPod.

The announcement from Apple hailed the digital music player as a "breakthrough" product.

In retrospect, that doesn't seem like hype.

In the most recent quarter alone, Apple shipped nearly nine (m) million iPods, up 35 percent from a year ago.

The iTunes download site has also helped the company reap record profits, and has been cited as a key factor behind the troubles facing traditional brick and mortar chains selling C-Ds. Newer versions of the device can play video.

New competition is emerging. It remains to be seen how effective Microsoft's upcoming Zune player will be in challenging Apple's dominance among music players. It's due out next month.
