East Texas Woman's Grandson Rides Around America

A Virginia man is taking a ride around America on his bicycle. Today, he paid his grandmother here in East Texas a visit. He will peddle more than 10,000 miles through 27 states and raise money for a nonprofit organization.

"I started on July 17th from Richmond, VA.  I've been riding my bicycle around the perimeter of the United States," said Landall Proctor, 24, who has almost completed his goal.  "I wanted to see the U.S. and I decided I wanted to see it from the seat of my bike," said Landall.

Landall is on day 97 of his journey and stopped in Overton to visit is grandmother, Anita Vineyard, who's been worrying about him.  "I was so scared every night.  I would just pray. But it has been the greatest thing. I am so glad he did it," said Vineyard.

Landall is not just riding his bike but has developed a mission.  "After I decided to do the trip, I decided to raise money for a non-profit.  My great-grandma in Texas who used Meals on Wheels and really appreciated someone took the time out of their schedule to give her a meal and visit with her," said Landall.

The money he raises will go to Meals on Wheels. Along the ride, Landall says he's developed a new perspective.

"It's been wonderful. I have been able to take away from this that the world is still a good place. People have opened up their homes to me and strangers on the road if I need directions have been nice and friendly. It's really been a great experience," he said.

Landall plans to leave East Texas tomorrow and will head back towards Richmond, Virginia. He estimates the trip will take him up to 20 days.
