Smith County officials believe an electric company is behind a huge, illegal dump site. The site is located in Troup, off Highway 135 near County Road 2164. Officials say the trash covers nearly three acres of private property.
The property's owner said his father has been accumulating the mountains of trash for about 40 years. But he does not know which company the trash belonged to. Authorities found out about the dump, after a burn pile got out of control and scorched nearly 30 acres.
Officials found wires, insulation, meters and lighting ballast and other material. "I have information that some of this material may be buried as deep as 15 feet underground. We don't know what kind of contaminants, if any. I would be fearful that there's at least lead and mercury," said Precinct 3 Smith County Deputy Constable James Lee.
Deputy Lee says the T.C.E.Q. will take soil samples to determine if there is contamination at the site or surrounding areas. Smith County officials says once they figure out which company the material belongs to, it will be held accountable. If you have any information regarding the site, contact the Precinct 3 Smith County Constable's Office.
