Fleet's Veteran Leadership Key For Lee

Two years later it is still on Tyler Fleet's mind.

"Probably the best catch I ever made as far as the impact at the time," Tyler said.

It was the catch that helped to seal the state title for the Robert E. Lee Red Raiders in 2004 and as just a sophomore, Tyler Fleet was on the receiving end. "The two point conversion we made in the state championship its fun to think about."

Now, Tyler is a senior and veteran leader of a young Red Raider squad. At tight end, he is one of only two starters remaining from the state championship team.

"This year, I can't let these guys down. I wanted to get the whole team up and ready to go this season," he said.

One year after winning state Lee did not make the post season. Fleet said he took the rocky 2005 season personally.

"As soon as the season was over," he said, "we all got in the weight room and I tried to get all the guys pumped up and let them know, it's embarrassing going 4-6 after everybody expects you to make another deep run in the playoffs."

The Red Raiders responded. With an overall record of 5-1 and winning their district opener, Lee is off to their best start since 2002. Fleet is one of the team's leaders in catches and said he feels this team is headed for the post season.

"I want to get out there and win because my concern is making the team better than they were last year."

Longview and Lee squareoff Friday night on Earl Campbell Field at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium at 7:30 pm.
