Ellis Receives Top Health Care Award
AUSTIN (Oct. 9, 2006) - Elmer G. Ellis, FACHE, president and chief executive officer of the East Texas Medical Center Regional Healthcare System in Tyler, has been named the 2006 recipient of the Texas Hospital Association's Earl M. Collier Award for Distinguished Health Care Administration. Established in 1965, the Collier Award is the highest honor bestowed by THA. Ellis will receive the award on Oct. 10, during THA's 2006 Leadership Conference in Austin.
"Elmer exemplifies the leadership qualities that this award recognizes," said Richard Bettis, CAE, president/CEO of THA. "His ‘build it and they will come' approach to providing health care services in rural markets is truly innovative. Because of his vision, residents of East Texas have access to high-quality health services right where they live. THA and Elmer's colleagues are pleased to recognize him with this prestigious award," Bettis said.
As a teenager, Ellis worked as an ambulance attendant in his hometown of Paris, Texas. Those early experiences fueled a passion for health care and convinced him of the need to provide services in the communities in which people live - even in the most rural regions of the state.
After serving as controller for St. Joseph Hospital in Paris, Ellis moved to Tyler in 1968 to become assistant administrator for Medical Center Hospital (now ETMC Tyler) - a move that ultimately would not only define his career, but also influence health services for a large portion of the state. In 1985, he was named president/CEO of the not-for-profit ETMC Regional Healthcare System.
Backed by a board of directors and an executive team that came to share his vision, Ellis began forming alliances with other East Texas hospitals. Today, the ETMC system represents a network of regional care, including the flagship facility in Tyler and hospitals in the following communities/counties: Athens, Carthage, Clarksville, Crockett, Fairfield, Gilmer, Jacksonville, Mount Vernon, Pittsburg, Quitman and Trinity. The network also includes three outpatient community medical centers: ETMC Cedar Creek Lake, ETMC Rusk and ETMC South Broadway.
The ETMC Rehabilitation Center, ETMC Specialty Hospital and ETMC Behavioral Health Center represent other key programs, while ETMC EMS and the ETMC regional trauma network reflect Ellis' conviction that East Texans should have access to top quality emergency care. ETMC Tyler has the special distinction of serving as the only Level I trauma center in East Texas.
Ellis holds both bachelor's and master's degrees from Texas A & M - Commerce/East Texas State University. He was named Distinguished Alumnus by Texas A & M University - Commerce in 1997 and was inducted into the Junior Achievement Business Hall of Fame for Tyler in 2005.
A Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, Ellis currently serves as regent of ACHE's East Texas division. He also has a long history of service to the Texas Hospital Association, working on numerous committees over the years and serving as chairman in 2000-2001. He currently is board chairman of THA's Texas Hospital Insurance NetworK.
Ellis and his wife, Betsy, provide leadership and support to many Tyler civic organizations and enjoy spending time with their children and grandchildren.
