John Tyler Gets Big District Win Over Mesquite

John Tyler put together a big fourth quarter to beat Mesquite 27-13 Thursday night in both schools 12-5A district opener.  The Lions dominated time of posession, but continually stubbed themselves in the foot with penalties.  As a result, they were limited to two Nester Varona field goals in the first half, and trailed 13-6 at halftime.

But the Lions defense stepped up in the second half and held the Skeeters scoreless.  John Tyler capitalized on two bad Mesquite punts that allowed the Lions to begin drives on the Mesquite 29 yard line.

Ramonte Hampton scored from one yard out early in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 13-13.  Kendall Hunter later scamperd 17 yards for a touchdown to give the  Lions their first lead of the ballgame at 20-13.  Hunter would seal the game with a late 5-yard touchdown.

The win was just the second of the season for John Tyler.  They improve to 2-4 on the season, but more importantly, 1-0 in district play.  Mesquite, who was playing without their starting quarterback Kelly Page, was the early favorite to win the district title.

The win may prove to be a key one for John Tyler when it comes to tie breakers.

The Lions next host Mesquite Horn next Thursday night, while Mesquite hosts North Mesquite.

The John Tyler Lions always seem to look sharp in their uniforms. But thanks to East Texas lawyer Keith Miller, the Lions will look better and play safer. Helmets that advertise lowering the impact of hits, and possibly reduce the amount of concussions, come with a hefty price-tag. Miller's donation of 7,500 dollars, will go to help the lions cover that cost. "Keith Miller's been a big sponsor of John Tyler High School football program for years now.  I know it's...More >>
