Longview Fall City Clean Up Held

For more than two decades citizens and city leaders in Longview have banded together every fall to beautify their city. Held today , it was the  Keep Longview Beautiful program. Young and old gave up their Saturday, to make Longview a little cleaner for everyone.

"You've got to have citizen involvement.  Besides what government's doing or what business does we've got to have people who say, 'You know what? I want this place to look better' and I think the effort really adds to that," said Longview city employee Sean Hara.

Hundreds turned out to volunteer the annual fall city clean-up, an event that has become something of a good will campaign. Volunteers combed over a dozen areas of the community, removing litter from streets, parks and neighborhoods.

"We really want to see Longview cleaned up there's a lot of people in Longview that want to see that happen and this is a part of that," said Hara.

More children joined the effort this year than ever before.  "I don't like seeing Longview trashing and all that, your hometown being messy," said Eva Reyes, 10, a volunteer.

Many helped clean up junk and litter at the homes of elderly or disabled residents.   "I love to see kids in the neighborhood doing positive things.  That's a good thing," said Timpson Street resident John Park.

"If the bad kids see them doing it maybe they'll change what they're doing," said one resident.

More than 300 volunteers took part in today's clean up effort.
