A taskforce created by Governor Rick Perry is trying to find a way to stop the rise of appraisal prices. This afternoon, the Texas Taskforce on Appraisal Reform stopped in Tyler to hear from East Texans. The main concern, while many Texan's tax rate is going down; the value of their homes and property keeps going up, increasing what they pay in taxes. The taskforce says it hopes to create an appraisal system that's fair for everyone.
"We need to control this huge increase and skyrocketing in appraisal values," said Thomas Pauken, Chairman of Taskforce. "There are other alternatives in terms of less reliance on the property taxes. That's what was done with the recently passed legislation, but we don't want to see that benefit taken away by appraisal creep or stealth tax, and so we're addressing that issue." The taskforce will be traveling throughout the state and hope to come up with a solution by the next legislative session.
