East Texas Fair Comes To An End

The 2006 East Texas State Fair comes to an end Saturday, but on a good note.   People were out early to take advantage of the last day of the fair. Fair organizers say attendance is up more than 20 percent from last year, and could break a record. They say, however, last year the fair was forced to close when Hurricane Rita came through. Organizers say good weather and new attractions are the reasons for high attendance.

"I do think there's a brand new spirit here," said East Texas State Fair General Manager John Sykes. "There are a couple of new attractions that we brought in. The helicopter ride seems to be a big talk of Tyler. Chain saw artists that come in and doing some different things. I think our exhibits are great this year and of course you can never forget the fair food."

Sykes also says the fair has outgrown its current location. The fair has purchased land just west of where it is now, but the plans for the new location are in the initial stages.
