A student walked into a rural school with a gun and shot the principal several times, authorities said. A suspect was taken into custody and all the children were reported safe.
Principal John Klang's condition was not immediately known, Sauk County sheriff's Capt. Michael Haifemann said.
The student walked into the school at about 8 a.m. and shots were fired as people tried to get him under control, Melissa Nigh, dean of students at Weston School, said in an interview broadcast on MSNBC.
The K-12 school was locked down Friday morning, officials said.
"All the children in the school were safe and none were harmed," Haifemann said.
Cazenovia is a community of about 300 people about 60 miles northwest of Madison.
