East Texas Crime Statistics Mirror National Trends

Crime rate statistics are out, and surprising to some, the level of crime in East Texas is not significantly lower than the nation as a whole.

The total rate of crime per capita isn't available from these new FBI statistics, but the Bureau says robberies and burglary reports are up from 2004, while kidnapping, bank robberies, and carjackings are down.

Peter Galbraith, the special agent in charge of Tyler's FBI office, says East Texas also has a serious drug problem locally, plus traffic on our highways contributes to the crime problem.

"You're in an area here in East Texas where it is a corridor for illegal drugs to big metropolitan areas like Chicago. We've got corridors like I-20, I-30, Highway 59 and 69 that run right through our territory.

Galbraith says the growth of the East Texas population inevitably brings more crime.
