Pine Springs Baptist Church is celebrating its 125th anniversary. Although many things have changed over the past century, the roots of the church and community are still deeply intertwined.
Mark Towns was born in Arlington and has been pastor of the church for only five years, but his family roots go back much farther. Towns' parents were married in the church and many of his grandmother's friends from childhood still attend.
Organized in 1881, the church's membership has waxed and waned over the years. Some local boys lost their lives in war while many soldiers from Camp Fannin stayed and married local girls. Older church members remember being baptized in a nearby pond called Donaldson's Pond. These days, baptism is in the church baptistry and Donaldson's Pond is filled with lilly pads.
