New Mexico Police Investigate Threat Against City

LAS CRUCES, N.M. Police in Las Cruces, New Mexico, are warning residents to watch for any suspicious activity -- after the city received two threatening letters.

The letters threaten random shootings unless city leaders hand over a ransom that police describe as "substantial."

Police are saying very little about the details of the threat.

They say it might be a hoax, and they don't want to alarm anyone -- but they thought it best to take the threat seriously.

Lieutenant Randy Lara says "Someone knows something out there," and making the threat public could generate helpful information.
