Heart Walk Raises Money For Heart Disease Research

More than a million people nation wide this year will participate in finding a cure for heart disease. This morning, East Texans hit the track for the American Heart Association's Heart Walk.  The event promotes physical activity and heart healthy living. Organizers say it also helps raise money for research.

Heart attack is the number one killer and stroke is the number three killer in the U.S.  Art Burke suffered a sudden cardiac arrest last March and is this years Honorary Chair of the Heart Walk.

"I think they're important because they draw attention to the fact there are many people who like me are fortunate to be alive because of our medical facilities in Tyler and America in general," said Art Burke. "I think it helps raise funds for both patient care, but also more importantly for research, to help find a cure."

The American Heart Association says its goal is to reduce death and disability by 20% by the year 2010.
