Fire Threatens Historical Square In Kaufman

Smoke fills the sky over an East Texas town threatening the its historic square.   The fire broke around 9 o'clock this morning in Kaufman, that's about 70 miles west of Tyler.   Business owners and other residents watched as firefighters worked to put out the blaze.

From above plumes of smoke can be seen hundreds of feet up in the air.   The fire began at the Feedstore restaurant, which has been there for the past 3 decades.  Officials say the Feedstore was engulfed in flames when the first units arrive at the scene. The owner of the restaurant watched as firefighters worked to put out the blaze.

"It's my whole life. Everything I've worked for over the last 10 years is in that restaurant," says Chad Evans, restaurant owner.

Part of the restaurant building did collapse. Firefighters from 10 surrounding communities worked with Kaufman fire department to put out the fire.  Residents also gathered to see the fire's impact on their town square.

"I grew up in this town. That place right there use to be the Western Auto. I'm just glad that they were able to save what they were able to save," says Floyd Choice, Kaufman resident.

It took several hours for firefighters to get the fire out, but thankfully they were able to contain the fire to the restaurant.   The two buildings next to the Feedstore restaurant did suffer some smoke and water damage. Officials say there were no reports of injuries.
