Generations of Tyler football players will take to Earl Campbell Field at Trinity Mother Frances for years to come.
Now, the hall of famer has been immortalized yet again. This time through a work of art.
Saturday afternoon on the campus of the University of Texas a nine-foot, 1,500 pound bronze sculpture of Campbell was unveilled. It stands at the southwest gate of Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memoral Stadium.
Earl won the Heismann trophy during his days as a Longhorn. He said it is nice to know the school will always remember his accomplishments.
"To have something like that for my sons and grandkids to see for the rest of their lives is pretty unbelievable," Campbell said.
"Earl for many years has been a big part of the history here," former coach Darrell K. Royal said. "Especially the football part. I think it's only appropriate that they have a statue of him here at the stadium."
