8th Annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Smith County

8th Annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Smith County

Sponsored by Blood & Cancer Center of East Texas

Tyler, TX-The Smith County American Cancer Society will hold their 8th Annual Relay For Life beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, October 6th through 7:00 a.m. Saturday, October 7th.   Tyler and Smith County walkers and runners will gather at the Robert E. Lee High School Practice Field to participate in this year's Relay For Life sponsored by the Blood & Cancer Center of East Texas.

Relay For Life is a celebration as well as a unique, challenging and fun way to raise money for the American Cancer Society and to raise cancer awareness in the community.  Teams of 12 to 15 people will camp out overnight and take turns walking or running around the track for the 12-hour overnight event.  Teams members collect pledges or donations prior to the event.  Teams compete for prizes in the categories or best theme, best campsite decoration and the most money raised.  There is entertainment provided for the all night event as well as a silent auction during the early evening activities.  There is also a special Luminaria ceremony at 9:00 pm that honors cancer survivors and memorializes those that have lost the battle.

The 2006 event presently has 50 teams participating with a goal of $180,000.  In 2005, Relay had 49 teams and raised             $110,000.  Organizers are very excited about this year's participation growth and community support and are very confident that the event will reach the goal.

There is still time for teams to join and participate in this year's event.  Organizers would also like to invite cancer survivors to register for Relay where they will have a special reception and recognition ceremony at the event in October.  To sign up for a team, register as a cancer survivor or to get more information about Relay, contact the American Cancer Society office in Tyler at 903-597-1383.
