Smith Added To List Of Texas Counties Needing Drought Assistance

Another East Texas county is among the latest Texas counties hoping to get money because of drought conditions. Governor Rick Perry announced the addition of Smith, and five more counties today.   More than a half dozen East Texas counties were already on a list.  The money would go to help farms and ranches struggling with the dry conditions, but a rancher we talked to doesn't know how much it will help.

"There are a lot of farmers out there looking for some assistance from somewhere, but with these government programs they get so complicated people don't apply for them," said Steve Carpenter, Cattle Raiser. "There are so many states that are in the same predicament that we are, I don't know if there is enough money to go around or not."   Texas has been suffering from severe drought for more than a year, resulting in 4.1 billion dollars in losses to the agricultural industry.
