Tyler Football Players Will Now Take "Earl Campbell Field"

During his days as one of the greatest running backs in the history of football, most folks said there was no stopping Earl Campbell.

A  state champion in high school football, a Heisman trophy winner, and hall of famer his list of accomplishments is endless.

His career began right here on the football fields of East Texas, now one East Texas field holds his name.

Saturday night the field at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium was officially named Earl Campbell Field.

With the John Tyler band playing "The Eyes of Texas Are Upon You", all eyes were on Earl Campbell.

Earl's former coaches and college recruiter were some of those who spoke to the crowd about his amazing career.

After the unveiling of the "Earl Campbell Field" logo and plaque on the stadium fieldhouse, Earl was driven around the field to the applause of the thousands of fans.

When he addressed the crowd he said he knew God had always made him special.

"You ever met a person like that?" Earl asked the crowd. "That it's just something different? Well, when I was right there on that football field and a big time before that football field, God gave Lynn King a talent. He gave Michael Johnson a talent. He gave Larry Hartsfield a talent. But He said you know, I'm going to pick one," Earl said looking up to the sky. "Thank you God. You picked a good one."

A nine-foot statute of Earl Campbell is scheduled to be unveiled on the University of Texas campus, Saturday, September 9.
