Local Red Cross Putting A Spin On National Preparedness Month

A new partnership is announced Friday to help East Texas families when disaster strikes.

The American Red Cross Chapter in Smith County called on some local car dealerships to help families who have lost their homes in fires. Because it's National Preparedness Month, dealers will donate $25 for every car they sell in September.

"It got our sales people excited. It got a lot of people excited in the dealership knowing they're doing a little extra besides just selling a car and making some money," says Monte Hall, General Sales Manager for Hall Buick-Pontiac-GMC in Tyler.

"It's also going to be getting that all important message out to the community that the most important thing we can all do is prepare ourselves, our families and our businesses," says Tammy Prater, Executive Director for the American Red Cross Smith County Chapter.

These are car dealers participating:

Smith County: Hall Buick, Classic Toyota, Tyler Ford, Wagner Cadillac and Advantage Auto

Cherokee County: Bob Francis Ford, Bill McRae Ford, Bacon Auto Country and Pearman Motor Co.

The largest disaster need in the area is for single family house fires. So far this year, more than 300 people have been affected by this kind of disaster.
