Courthouse Shooting Leaves Inmate Dead, Deputy Injured

A hospital spokeswoman says an inmate accused of grabbing a deputy's gun and shooting him in a northeast Georgia courthouse has died.

Spokeswoman Elaine Cook says 28-year-old Timothy Lemar Jones died early this morning at Athens Regional Hospital, where he was taken after yesterday's shooting at the Jackson County Courthouse.

Despite being in chains and leg irons, Jones was able to grab a sheriff deputy's gun and shoot the deputy. He's in good condition with wounds in the arm, leg and abdomen. The prisoner was shot as he tried to escape from a courthouse in a police van and had been in critical condition.

The deputy had been returning four prisoners to jail when one of them attacked him inside a secure area of the Jackson County Courthouse. Officials say the inmate got only about 100 yards before he was shot by two deputies.
