Tyler Student Overcomes Leukemia; Returns To School

One East Texas student had a whole year to look forward to the first day of school Monday.

Rebecca Hoffman missed the 2005-2006 school year, battling a rare form of leukemia. Monday she got back into the swing of things, now an 8th grader at J.R. Moore Middle School.

We learned about Rebecca last year, when her 6th grade teacher asked fellow students to collect tabs from soda cans. 550 pounds were collected to donate to the Ronald McDonald house to help kids like Rebecca.

Rebecca is fully recovered from her cancer. She says she was nervous to come back, but felt at ease when she saw her friends again. "We ran to each other and said 'hi!' and hugged and ran to each other and we talked for a little bit too!," says Rebecca.

Rebecca starts the 8th grade on schedule because Moore Middle worked closely with a home bound teacher who gave Rebecca her 7th grade lessons while she was recovering.
