Patriots Soccer Picked To Win Again

The University of Texas at Tyler men's soccer team has been picked to win the 2006 American Southwest Conference Championship and repeat its 2005 ASC Season Championship after a vote of the league's 14 head coaches and sports information directors, the conference office announced on Monday.

The Patriots, which went 14-4-1 overall and 10-2-1 in ASC play last season, pulled in 380 total points with 21 first-place votes. UT Tyler handily got the top nod over 2005 ASC Tournament Champion Hardin-Simmons, which totaled 343 points and four first-place votes.

"It is an honor to be chosen to finish at the top of such a competitive conference," said UT Tyler head coach Kenny Jones. "I think the ranking is a testament to the quality of players we have on our team, but it also means that they have to work hard day in and day out."

Both UT Tyler and Hardin-Simmons also received votes in's Top 25 Preseason Poll.

University of Texas-Dallas grabbed two top-spot votes and racked up 330 points to land in the third spot, while conference tournament runner-up University of Ozarks was right behind with 312 points and the other first-place vote.

Schreiner University (278 pts.), East Texas Baptist University (212 pts.), LeTourneau University (205 pts.), McMurry University (204 pts.), University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (179 pts.) and Texas Lutheran University (160 pts) round out the top-10 spots. Mississippi College (155 pts.), Louisiana College (71 pts.) and Concordia-Austin and first-year program Howard Payne University, which each tallied 59 points, complete the preseason poll.

Austin College, which finished in fourth place last season, is no longer a member of the conference and UT Tyler is in its final year as a provisional member of NCAA Division III. As a provisional member, UT Tyler is not eligible for postseason play.

The Patriots will begin their season with a road trip to Georgetown, Texas, on Sept. 1-2 to face Southwestern and No. 2 Trinity (Texas). UT Tyler's home opener is set for Sept. 9 at 4 p.m. against William Carey.
