Tigers Hope To Add Football Title To Compliment Basketball Championship

Some of the stars of Arp's championship hoops team are leaving the hardwood and hitting the field this season, with the hopes of doing what no Tiger team has done before them: win state in football.

Seventy-one players turned out for this week of practice. Coach Dale Irwin said the teams playoff success and the new direction he's taken the program has any able athlete wanting to be an Arp Tiger.

There are some changes in store this year. With realignment, 2005's Class 3A Division II champion the Tatum Eagles are now a 2A team in Arp's district.

The Tigers said they are ready for the challenge. They have district MVP and basketball champ Kendal McClendon at quarterback and tournament MVP Sedrick Johnson at wide receiver.

"We try to keep the intensity in anything we do," Johnson said. "Track, football, basketball we try to keep the intensity and win in everything we do."

"Nothing like having two rings on a finger," McClendon said. "It would be great to have. "

"Got a lot of experience in our offense," Coach Irwin said. "We've got eight starters back on the offensive side of the ball so, we feel real confident about our offense. We've got to get our defense playing to the level that our offense is."

The Tigers will open the season on the road against Edgewood.
