East Texan Grabs World Title In Disc Golf

From backyard frisbee thrower, to world champ. An East Texan has taken his love of disc golf to a new level. Jerry Power of Tyler has been playing disc golf for 26 years, usually with friends at Lindsey Park in Tyler. But two weeks ago, Power took on the worlds best in Tulsa, winning the amateur Advanced Masters title at the Amatuer Disc Golf World Championships.

"One of the things I won was actually a pro membership," said Power, "so they're kind of expecting me to play pro now, professionally.  Now, whether I do well or not, we'll see.  I don't know."

Power, who also hosts a charity disc golf tournament every year in Tyler, says the title has added benefits.

"The tournament is the Piney Woods Pro-am," said Power.  "It benefits the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. And, the fact that I won, I've already had more people tell me that they are going to be interested in coming to this years tournament, so that's pretty neat."

That tournament is scheduled for December 9-10 at Lindsey Park in Tyler.

Also at Lindsey Park, Power will help host a free Disc Golf Clinic October 14 at 10am. That event is open to everyone.
