East Texas Man Drowns On Lake Gladewater

Another drowning tonight on an East Texas lake, this one on Lake Gladewater.   The Gladewater Police Department says it received a phone call around 3:30 p.m. that a man had gone under the water. Police say the man was swimming by himself at Lake Gladewater's public beach.   The Longview Fire Department Dive Team was called out this afternoon and recovered the body around 5:30 p.m. Police say the man walked out too far and stepped off a cliff that's in the water. Some kids swimming nearby spotted the man go under and told a man standing by.

"I swam out there and went diving for him," said witness Chad Henry. "I dove for him several times. I went down about ten feet diving for him, but I could never find him.  It's a 15 to 30 feet channel that drops pretty good. I guess he stepped off and couldn't recover."

Gladewater Police have identified the man as 38-year-old Larry Williams.  Henry says he's seen Williams at the beach before, but rarely saw Williams get in the water. He says it's possible Williams was not a strong swimmer.
