Friends, Colleagues Hold Fundraiser For Henderson Nurse Fighting Cancer

An East Texas community rallies around a nurse suffering with two forms of cancer. Today, a fundraiser was held in honor of Sue Malone from Henderson.   Hundreds of people cooked out, to raise money for their friend.

"Because of our love and concern, we wanted to support Sue and show her how much we all love her," says Sarah Moake, Organizer.

Sarah Moake and 58- year old Sue Malone were colleagues at Henderson Memorial Hospital for more than 20 years.

"Sue was diagnosed with cancer of her nasal pharynx," says Sarah.

"She had her major surgery 3 weeks ago, where they removed the tumor.  Then they also found a secondary cancer of the thyroid which is very rare to have two cancers at the same time," says Sarah.

Today, friends and co-workers came together and held a cook-out near the hospital to raise money for Sue. The money will go to medical and other expenses.

"She wishes she could be here today but she is in Dallas having some test run and could not come today," says Sarah.

"I am here to support Sue and her family to try to return a small part of the blessing that she has been in my life," says Beverly Bowman, friend of Sue Malone.

"She has taken care of a lot of people and a lot of residence here in Henderson and it's time now that we care and nurture her," says Sarah.

"I love her a lot and I know she is going to pull through this.  I'm glad to see everybody doing this for her," says Chad Boatwright, friend of Sue Malone.

Friends say her faith, strength and will to live has inspired them all.

Organizers say they raised more than $9,000 today.
