Tropical Storm Chris Strengthens, Nears Eastern Caribbean

Tropical Storm Chris continues to gain strength on its way to the eastern edge of the Caribbean, prompting a run on groceries and gasoline.

The third named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season has top sustained winds of nearly 60 miles-per-hour and could become a minimal hurricane later in the week. Long-range forecasts put the storm anywhere from south of Cuba to Florida by late in the weekend.

Tourists at a resort just outside the Antiguan capital say they have no plans to evacuate.

The U-S National Weather Service says Puerto Rico will begin to experience strong gusts of wind and heavy rain this afternoon. The Leeward Islands and Puerto Rico could receive up to eight inches of rain and could experience flash floods and mudslides.
