Longview Neighborhoods Celebrate National Night Out

Tuesday night, eighty neighborhoods throughout Longview celebrated National Night Out, a 16-year tradition for its residents.

And Mayor Jay Dean and Police Chief J.B. McCaleb made it out to some of the parties. Participants say National Night Out is a fun way to can take a stand against crime in their neighborhood.      

Daryl Gregg, a participant, says, "With all the violence that we had here about I guess a couple of months ago or so it's good for us to out and fellowship among each other and just have a good time, meet each other." 

"We have family, we have friends, we have children that live in this neighborhood and we are trying to keep it as safe as possible by getting to know each other," says Helen Portley, a party co-host.

Mayor Jay Dean says, "We've had some instances in our community and I thank God that we've been able to slow some of that down and it's because of events just like this."

Last year Longview ranked 33rd in the nation for participation in National Night Out.

    East Texas firefighters come to the rescue of angel tree kids. Big Sandy firefighters held two fund-raisers over the past week to help their local Angel Tree network. They collected enough donations to buy toys for 28 kids through the local group 'Agape House Ministries Angel Tree' coordinators.
