Boy's Grandmother Speaks Out About His Death

Longview Police are still looking for Fredrico Garcia, the step-father of a 9-year-old boy. He will be charged with aggravated assault--a charge that could be upgraded to manslaughter or murder.

The boy Ruben Mata died Sunday at Dallas Children's Hospital. Police say Ruben caught the drill his stepfather allegedly threw to him, but the drill bit pierced his chest.

There were tears and hugs as Ruben Mata's family mourns the tragic loss of a boy they say was so full of life.   Ruben's grandmother, Linda Boucam says, "he was very energetic, very lively, he loved to play soccer, he loved wearing cowboy clothes, anything to do with cowboys."

Linda last saw her grandson, brain dead and on life support, before he died Sunday.   "To watch my baby lay there like that, that was hard. That was the hardest thing I ever had to do."

And now she wants the man responsible, her daughter's husband and Ruben's stepfather, to come forward.    She says, "he had no right to take that baby's life, no right.  I would like for him to take responsibility for what he done to my grandson....whether it was intentionally or not intentionally."

Linda says she hopes Ruben isn't remembered by how tragically he died, but by how happily he lived..."he was such a perfect little boy, you know, there is nobody like him, I mean, and everybody loved him, everybody loved him," she says.

And Linda says everybody will certainly miss him. Memorial services for Ruben Mata were held Tuesday night at St.Matthew's in Longview. Police are asking anyone with information on the whereabouts of Fredrico Garcia to please contact Crimestoppers.
