Tyler Native Inducted Into Baseball HOF

They say he once hit a 500 foot homer. His bat was called "Big Bertha." Tyler native Louis Santop was a superstar in the Negro Leagues long before there were TV cameras to follow his hits.

Sunday, the East Texan was inducted as a member of the 2006 National Baseball Hall of Fame.

Santop was born in Tyler in 1890. Many referred to him as "the Black Babe Ruth."

He joined the New York Lincoln Giants in 1911.

After a long career he became a broadcaster and later a bartender. He died in 1942.

Also Sunday the first woman inducted into th HOF. Effa Manley served as the general manager and co-owner of the Brooklyn and later Newark Eagles in the 1930's and worked for civil rights.
