Higher Fines For Putting Trash Out Overnight Did Not Pass

Tuesday we reported about a Longview councilman proposing harsher fines for putting trash out before 5am...well, those fines will not increase.

Tonight the Longview City Council did not second a motion to approve those stricter fines. The current fines will stay in place. The councilman supporting the fines, John Sims, said many citizens called him with concerns. And he says even though his proposal died, he is still happy with the outcome.

"The main thing I wanted to do by doing that was is to get people's attention, and I don't want their money, I don't want the city to take their money, but it seems like if you start talking about 1000,2000 dollars, oh boy...I got my point across: don't be leaving your trash out," says John Sims, District 1 Council Member.

The city is now going to implement a policy that will allow trash to be put on the curb the night before if the bags are inside containers sealed with a lid.
