Yates Found Not Guilty

After 13 hours of deliberation over a three day period, the jury finally returned a verdict of not guilty by reason of insanity.

That verdict came in spite of the fact a forensic psychiatrist testified Yates was not insane at the time of the killings. Yates' ex-husband, Rusty, says the verdict is a miracle.

"The jury was able to see past, you know, what happened, look at why it happened, understand that Andrea was ordinarily just a loving mother who fell to this disease and did an unthinkable act," says Rusty.

Andrea Yates was convicted once before, but that decision was overturned when the court found some testimony to be false. Yates' attorneys have always maintained she suffered from post-partum psychosis, but prosecutors say, despite that, she knew right from wrong.

The jury forman, Todd Frank, said today, their decision was based on fact rather than emotion. He hopes the verdict will expand the awareness about mental illness.

"Don't let this happen again. What you have to do with the legislature, with the insurance companies, with the medical community, don't let this happen again," said Frank.

Since the drownings, Yates has been treated with antipsychotic medicine. Tomorrow, she will be committed to a state mental facility.
