Drug Maker Reports Good Results On Possible Bird Flu Vaccine

By next year you may be able to roll up your sleeve and get a shot to protect against bird flu.

Drug maker GlaxoSmithKline says there are encouraging results from tests of a prototype vaccine. The company is optimistic about being able to produce it in mass quantities fairly soon.

The vaccine uses an inactive strain of the bird flu virus, along with an ingredient that stimulates the immune system. But since it uses low doses of the active ingredient, it means a lot more can be produced.

Testing was done with 400 people in Belgium.

But there are no guarantees when it comes to bird flu. As one expert points out, this vaccine will only protect against certain strains. If there's an outbreak of some other strain, the vaccine may be of little use.
